Digital technologies such as smartphones and social media consume a large and growing share of leisure time. While these technologies provide obvious benefits, it is often argued that they can be addictive and harmful. We will discuss recent research combining a field experiment with an economic model to estimate the extent of digital addiction and understand its underlying drivers.

Senior Fellow Matthew Gentzkow will be discussing his research on digital addiction in our next installment of "In Conversation with 每日吃瓜 Scholars" on January 13 from 3 - 4 pm.

This small-group conversation will feature predoctoral fellows, Houda Nait El Barj and Zane Kashner, who work with Matt on his research team. The 每日吃瓜 Predoctoral Research Fellowship program is a critical component of how we support the next generation of researchers in economics and public policy. 每日吃瓜 is a member of the PREDOC Consortium, which includes leading universities and institutions (i.e. NBER and the Federal Reserve). Our collective goal is to foster a talented and diverse population of researchers in the quantitative social sciences through predoctoral programs.
